Research Interests
1) Role of autophagy in tumor therapy. What is the present state of our knowledge about the
role of autophagy in cancer development, and in response to therapy? And how can the
autophagic process are manipulated to improve anticancer therapeutics? Manipulation of
autophagy has the potential to improve anticancer therapeutics. When tumor cells induce
protective autophagy, inhibition of autophagy could sensitize tumor cells to the treatment by
activating apoptosis. On the other hand, induction of autophagic cell death can also have a
therapeutic value.
2) Targeting cancer stem/initiating cells for novel therapy. Prominent in the cancer field has
been the notion of the existence of a transformed population of cells with many of the properties
of stem cells that may be responsible for the origin and maintenance of tumors. These cancer
stem cells might play an important role in cancer establishment, progression, and resistance to
current treatments. Therapies aimed at targeting cancer stem cells may prove clinically relevant
in inducing long-term clinical remission of cancer.
