DEPUTY SHERIFF - INSTITUTIONS

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Under general supervision, maintains close security watch and supervises inmates at county jail.
Performs other duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under supervision of higher-level officer who assigns work detail and reviews work for
conformance to established procedures, policies, rules, and regulations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervises inmates. Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this class.
Incumbents in this class may also work as a Deputy Sheriff in either the central office or restitution
center.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Duties may include, but are not limited to the following)
JAIL FACILITY:
1.
Maintains order, discipline, and security of inmates in jail. Processes inmates admitted and discharged for transfer from facilities including booking and release, finger printing, photographing, and issuing supplies and clothing to new inmates. Supervises inmates during clothing and linen exchanges, meals, visitation, commissary activities, cleaning of facilities, and performs regular hourly checks of all inmates. Follows doctors or nurses orders and instructions in care of ill inmates. Maintains records and files as required.
RESTITUTION CENTER:
1.
Conducts regular security checks of facility, including occupied sanitation facilities (restrooms, showers) and living areas; performs regular security searches of residents (on-person) and areas occupied by residents; inspects facility for needed preventative maintenance and safety hazards. Maintains logbook and accounts book; records events during assigned shifts; checks residents in and out of the facility; supervises and controls visitors to the facility and on the grounds. Prepares written reports and maintains records necessary to the effective operation of the program. Dispenses/controls medications and antabuse; takes drug surveys. Fills in for other personnel as necessary when they are absent. Conducts personal interviews with clients to ascertain needs; maintains chronological case histories; confers with spouses, families, employers and others relative to client needs; conducts interviews and investigations of clients in pre-trial status, on probation or parole. Presents facts and evaluation of cases to court; carries out disposition ordered by courts.
RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

Knowledge and ability in use of equipment used in identification of inmates; ability to effectively
control inmates in all situations; ability to supervise and discipline inmates; knowledge of, and
experience using, a computer keyboard and PC equipment with ability to type by touch; ability to keep
accurate records; ability to follow orders, both written and oral; good physical condition and strength
to handle unruly inmates.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
1.
Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, Citizenship of the United States; and Eighteen (18) months experience as a Corrections Officer or Deputy; OR Any equivalent acceptable combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Possess a Basic Corrections certification from the Department of Public Safety, Standards and Training, and/or any equivalent out-of-state law enforcement accreditation recognized by DPSST; OR Must pass the Stanard POST test, prior to entering the DPSST Career Officer Development Course. Must possess the ability to attend and pass DPSST Career Officer Development Course, within 12 months of hire date. Successful out-of-state applicants are hired at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level until Oregon certification is achieved.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1.
Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Possess the ability to work rotating shifts, split shifts or other alternative work schedules. Final candidates will be subject to a personal background investigation including, but not limited to, employment, criminal and driving histories.
